Monitored Elements:

By monitoring the above elements we can detect and resolve concerns before they become problems. This information is available to the client via our service statistics page.

Security:

Physical security is often overlooked when we think of network security, when in fact it can be the most important type of security there is. All of the servers are located in a highly secure facility monitored 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Along with being secure, the facilities are designed to withstand many types of natural disaster. Systems such as halon fire suppression, fully redundant DC power and seismically certified hardware insure that our network will remain intact even through the worst conditions with no or minimal data loss.

Bandwidth:

Technically, the term 'bandwidth' comes from the field of electrical engineering, where bandwidth represents the total distance or range between the highest and lowest signals on the communication channel, or the band. However we're going to use the term in it's commonly misused form while describing maximum bit rate or theoretical throughput of communication channel.

A regular analog modem transfers data at a maximum rate of 56,000 bits per second or 56Kbs. Some other technologies such as ISDN or DSL allow transfer rates of 128K, 256K and higher. An even faster cable modem could have a transfer rate of up to 9Mb/second.

In the chart below we show transfer rates of other technologies used in the communications industry.

Copper (T carrier) Fiber (Optical Carrier)
   T1 = 1.544Mbps    OC-1 = 51.84Mbps
   T2 = 6.312Mbps    OC-3 = 155Mbps
   T3 = 44.736Mbps    OC-12 = 622Mbps
   T4 = 274.176Mbps    OC-24 = 1.2Gbps
     OC-48 = 2.4Gbps
Our servers are connected, via a 100Mb Ethernet connection to two fully redundant layer 3 switches . Each connected to five unique tier 1 providers via a minimum of OC-3.

If converting between kilobits, megabits, and gigabits is making you crazy try our handy conversion calculator.

Location:

Physical location of a server is often overlooked when choosing a hosting company, however, it can be a very important aspect in your web site performance. All of the servers at our Albany, NY hosting facility are strategically placed in the Network Operations Center(NOC) of a major network access provider. These web servers are connected to an Internet backbone via a 100Mb Ethernet to multiple Tier 1 OC-12's . This should be considered prime Internet real estate.

Servers:

All are Intel base fully redundant servers that are backed up daily.

  • In 1999 JSW4.NET logged less than 12 hours of actual down time, that's greater than 99.9% of operative time over a 12 month period.
  • In the year 2000 they logged only 6 hours of total down time.
  • In the year 2001 there was less than 1 hour of system down time.
  • That brings us to the coveted five 9's, 99.999% operative time.
  • Continuously through 2003, 2003 and 2004
